You Want Me To Flex What?!?

Every Sunday Night

Entering into my 4th week of physio with my new, totally awesome physiotherapist Katie, I had to ask the question “you want me to flex what?”.  Katie laughed and replied, “you know, like Kegels”.  Cue awkward pause followed by awkward laughs.  My response to her  ”is this some sort of punishment for making obnoxious Kegel jokes last night?”.  Nope, in fact Continue reading

Ankle Update!

First off, a big ol’ apology for being so out of the loop lately.  My ankle injury has really taken it’s toll on me and honestly it’s made staying motivated a real challenge. But enough of the boo-hooing, let’s get down to business!

So, a very loooong 14 weeks ago I made one silly little misstep *doh* while trail running that has now resulted in me being out of the game nearly 3 months! *ugh* During the time that I’ve been injured it’s definitely been an uphill battle, I’ve been in constant pain, my ankle puffs up like a blowfish from time to time, and some days it’s a struggle just to Continue reading

Black & Blue & ASTYM All Over

Hey guys! This is just a quick little picture update, I’m busy packing my bags for a little getaway, but will be sure to elaborate on the photos that I’m posting when I get back to Vancouver!  Today I had my 2nd and EXTREMELY painful ASTYM treatment to my entire right leg, from the tip of my toes up to my hip.  Below you’ll find the result of todays treatment…think I can still pull off my cute sundress this weekend while sporting these?

Have a great weekend everyone and happy running!

Blame It On The Sprain (yep, I went there)

As you probably know I’m currently nursing a bit of an ankle injury. Last time I updated I was waiting on pending x-ray results and heading off to my first physiotherapy appointment. So, I thought I’d give you all a little update on the ol’ ankle sprain.

The day after my last blog I received a call from my doctor, my x-ray was negative, meaning that there was no fracture and my sprain was just a regular eversion sprain, not the dreaded high ankle sprain that I had previously feared.  Regular sprain = GOOD!  She advised that I not run for at least a week and “take it easy” after that. *booo*  And at this point she was going to turn over my care to my physiotherapist Steve.

tape job

My first visit with Steve at Vancouver Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic went really well.  I haven’t been to physio in a number of years, I used to go regularly for the treatment of my left IT band issues, but haven’t been since I started running.  Steve did a full work-up on me, starting with the basics and working towards my injury. The first thing he pointed out to me was my leg length discrepancy. Who knew I was lopsided? Certainly not me! Turns out my right leg is just over a cm shorter than my left leg, which in turn explains why I’ve had IT band issues for so long, my left leg is literally in a micro-squat ALL THE TIME to try to get down to the length of my right leg.  Anyways, back to my ankle.  My physio Continue reading

Sprain Sprain Go Away

So as you may know, my journey to the San Francisco half marathon has come to a screeching halt. Whoa, EEEECHH, Emergency brake pulled, parachute opened, the director has called “cut”!  Okay, okay, perhaps I’m being a little on the dramatic side, so here’s what’s actually going down.

YAY! BC trails! *not a picture of the actual injury day

Four days ago I decided to go out for a trail run and enjoy some of BC’s beautiful outdoors, in doing so I managed to take an unlucky step, a split-second decision to step here instead of there and I rolled the crap out of my right ankle.  I thought “oh shit”, realized I was “okay” and then carried on. It hurt, but it definitely wasn’t enough to keep me from finishing the run I had set out on.

The day after my injury.  I woke up with my post-Canada-day-maple-syrup hangover and did a quick check of my ankle. It felt pretty good.  A little sore, a little achey, but nothing to keep me from going out on my scheduled Saturday training run.  I popped a few Advil and was out the door.  During my run I could tell I was favoring my injured ankle slightly, but I pushed through regardless. Floating On Cloud 9

10milerun

Out & Back 10 Miler

I don’t know how I did it, but somehow I managed an average pace of 9:29 min/mile today on my 10 mile run, taking off an average of 35 seconds/mile from last weeks 10 mile run! I know those numbers don’t seem like a lot, but to me they are HUGE!  Am I elated about this? HELL YES I am! Am I shocked? Yup. Am I hoping this is the beginning of something good? Absolutely!

My morning got off to a sloth-like, sluggish Continue reading
